Proud to be appointed to President’s Council, helping to improve the financial lives of our nation’s kids

I’m excited to say that I’ve been appointed by President Obama to the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans, a new bipartisan committee dedicated to increasing the financial know-how of kids of all ages and economic backgrounds. The Council will make recommendations to the President that will, we hope, pave the way for all of the nation’s children to learn essential financial lessons that can improve their lives.

On the previous Council, I saw firsthand how hungry parents are for this information, and how new technologies play a key role in helping spread the word. One effort that I spearheaded, the interactive tool MoneyAsYouGrow.org, has drawn more than one million visits since its May 2012 White House launch. Most interesting to me is the grassroots manner in which the site has reached families—fueled mainly by social media including Pinterest and Facebook—with no advertising or marketing budget.

I am looking forward to sparking the interest of even more families with this new Council’s work, and would love to hear what issues you think should top our agenda. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below, on my Facebook page, or email me.
